When planning a trip to Slovenia, having a reliable source of internet access is essential for easy navigation and communication. Whether you’re looking to find the top-notch restaurants, get directions to your accommodation, book a taxi, or share memorable moments with your loved ones, having a sim card is a must.
While roaming might be an option, the costly fees associated with international travel make it much more practical to opt for an eSIM or a local sim card. Thankfully, obtaining either of these options in Slovenia is incredibly straightforward.
To help you make an informed decision, this comprehensive guide will provide you with all the necessary information on purchasing a sim card in Slovenia, including current pricing and the best sim card option tailored specifically to your needs.
The best sim card in Slovenia is the A1 Simple Net package. You will pay 10 EUR for the sim card which comes with 5 EUR credit.
If you are visiting Slovenia for less than 3 days this will be enough to get 2GB data valid for 3 days. If you are staying for longer, I recommend topping up 5EUR and purchasing the 7GB package which is valid for 30 days. Including sim card this comes to 15 EUR.
Another great option is to get the Airalo Slovenia eSim. Data packages range from $5 USD to $46 USD, however, for most people the 5GB data package costs $15 USD (14 EUR) and will be perfect.
A Tourist Sim Card in Slovenia costs 15 EUR (10 EUR package + 5 EUR sim) in January 2025, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.
Alternatively, an eSim in Slovenia will cost between $5 USD and $46 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.
I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Slovenia which includes 5GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $15 USD.
Telekom Slovenije and A1 Slovenia have long been the main sim card providers in Slovenia. There’s also a newcomer on the market called IZI. Telekom Slovenije is the largest and oldest telecommunications company in the country, which is why it is a popular pick for visitors into Slovenia.
Si.mobil is now called A1 Slovenia. A1 is also available in some of the Balkan countries. They’re known for fast internet speeds which is great for using social media, Google Maps and other apps during your holiday.
Being the new kid on the block, IZI is still considered a smaller player in the Slovenian sim card market but is gaining popularity as they offer cost-effective options for mobile internet users.
When I visited Slovenia, my plan was to visit the more touristic areas such as Ljibljana and Bled, but I also intended on doing hiking in remote areas, like Bohinj. So for me, having a sim card with country-wide connectivity was important. Telekom Slovenije ticked these boxes as they offer reliable network coverage across the country, whilst still offering plans with competitive rates. A1 is also a leading telecommunications company in Slovenia. They offer tourist sim cards that provide unlimited data, national calls and national text messages. Coverage, alike Telekom Slovenije is excellent in both the popular tourist spots and the stunning landscapes ensuring visitors seamless communication with friends and family back home during their trip to Slovenia.
The price of a A1 Slovenia tourist sim card in Slovenia is 10 EUR.
The plan offered by A1 Slovenia stores offers 7GB data valid for 30 days.
IZI is a newer telecommunications company, but they use the same network as Telekom Slovenije. This means that connectivity around the country is great using IZI and being a newer network, their focus is to provide low-cost sim cards which can be purchased easily at places like gas stations and convenience stores. If you’re looking for the most budget tourist sim card in Slovenia, go with IZI.
The price of a IZI tourist sim card in Slovenia is 11.9 EUR.
The plan offered by IZI stores includes 40GB data (11GB EU data) valid for 1 month.
Identify the mobile providers in Slovenia: Telekom Slovenije, A1 Slovenia and IZI are your best options in Slovenia.
Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can be found all over any major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. You can’t buy sim cards in airports in Slovenia. If you’re on a budget it is usually cheaper to use the airport wifi instead and purchase your sim card in a store near your hotel.
Bring the necessary documents: It is not legally necessary in Slovenia to bring your passport with you in order to purchase a sim card. However, I still recommend bringing it just in case as it can be a major hassle to head into a Telekom Slovenije, A1 Slovenia or IZI store only to have to come back again later with your passport – trust me, I’ve done this more than once!
Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are likely to be your best option, for example the prepaid plan by Telekom Slovenije that includes 5GB data for 10 EUR.
Pay and activate your card: You can expect to pay 15 EUR (10 EUR package + 5 EUR sim) to purchase your sim card. The staff in-store will help you install the sim card and activate it for you.
Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always try searching for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine before leaving. If it’s not, the staff will be able to help you adjust your settings.
Buying a prepaid sim card for Slovenia at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.
However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.
In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.
If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Slovenia then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Slovenia have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.
If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.
I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Telekom Slovenije, A1 Slovenia and IZI. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Slovenia are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.
Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.
If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Slovenia with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.
The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

Following these instructions should take just a couple of minutes, then you’ll have a sim card in Slovenia without having to venture outside.
